SERVICES
I. PROCESS EXPERTS
As process experts,
CIIAN consultants provide services to those in conflict. We serve
as third party interveners, when invited, to furnish dialogue assisting
processes and communication techniques to parties in conflict. We
also provide facilitation services and training in conflict resolution.
In addition, we act as peace advocates and coaches for specific
interests in certain situations.
Conflict
Intervention
Conflict Intervention
involves conflict management, conflict resolution, reconciliation,
and conflict capacity building. In conflict management, the focus
is on containing the conflict, whereas the goal of conflict resolution
is to delve into the issues at hand in order to address root causes.
Conflict resolution seeks to repair the harms done and restore the
relational dimensions for future constructive interactions. Reconciliation,
while also focusing on relational aspects, works at a much deeper
level, striving for forgiveness, empowerment and recognition. Capacity
building aims to directly transform the attitudes, knowledge and
abilities of the actors involved in the conflict or post-conflict
situation. Examples of processes employed and/or services provided

Conflict
Competency Training
Conflict Competency
Training operates at two levels. For the most part, CIIAN looks
to design and develop training programs that meet specific needs
and interests through eliciting a methodology from local actors
on the ground. CIIAN's training is grounded in contemporary principles
of learning (including andragogy for adults), an experiential student-centered
pedagogy and a reflective, theory-informed practice, which includes
a strong clinical element. People learn "to do" through
our training programs.
CIIAN also offers
a prescriptive, "off the shelf" training program in peacebuilding
and conflict resolution that focuses on best practices. This program
attracts an international audience that brings its own diversity
and richness to the training.
Facilitation
Our facilitation
services have been offered to groups who are experiencing conflict,
as well as those who just anticipate it. These services include
the design and delivery of inclusive participatory approaches, community
consultations, strategic planning sessions and group dialogue processes.
Opening dialogue, overseeing difficult conversations, structuring
full participation and promoting consensus-based decision-making
are often the aims of such facilitations.

We assist partners
in developing dialogue or problem solving approaches that are collaborative
and consensus based. These dialogue structures can be used to determine
social and economic development paths, to make decisions about community
needs and priorities and to enhance local governance participation.
CIIAN can also
assist organizations and communities to adopt proactive approaches
to conflict, through the design and development of preventive conflict
competencies and processes. We are able to monitor and evaluate
our programming and objectives, using participatory methods before,
during and after implementation. The essential focus is one of conflict
prevention.
